Cars in general really. Its disturbing the amount of people that tell me “I don’t know anything about cars. All I know is how to drive them and that they need gas.” Whats more dumb though, is that people literally have no idea what they drive. The following is an actual list of cars, fictional names that people have actually said to me when I ask them what kind of car do they have at work. they either get the year wrong, or string together makes and models that don’t exist. Every time someone said one of these made up cars I wrote it down because it was just too good not to:

1985 Honda Fit: because we all know the Fit and CRX came to market at the same time

1989 GMC Acadia: GM got a jump on the crossover craze early

2010 Kia X:?

Nissan CR-V

Dodge Nissan: That’s it. That’s all they said. When I asked them the model they again said Nissan.

2003 Plymouth PT Cruiser: Kind of makes since considering the PT was supposed to go to Plymouth

2003 GMC Avalanche: This is another one that made sense to me in way. Was kinda surprised after I thought about it that GMC didn’t get a version of the Avalanche.

2017 Buick GMC: Another one with this being all the person said.

Infiniti G45: If only

BMW Range Rover: Kind of makes sense since BMW did own Range Rover at one point.

1961 Kia Rio: Didn’t know Kia had a small car in the 60's

2010 Nissan Maxim: Dumb

2013 Mercedes 450SE: Because the W116 went out of production a few years ago.

2002 Toyota Honda Accord

2003 Mercedes Kompressor: Guy got mad at me when I pressed him for the model and said “I just told you, Kompressor.

And lastly a real gem: 2018 Honda Rav4 Toyota Hybrid

Stupidity knows no bounds. I don’t get how people can just drive around in something and they don’t know what it is.

I had a client meeting at an old office with him and his wife both showing up in Range Rovers. I asked if he had the Supercharged version and he said ‘i dont know’. How do you drop $100k on a vehicle and not know what you just bought.

Infiniti G45

Sounds like a killer engine swap from the late 90s. Somehow, I doubt that’s the case.

My wife says she wants audi S5. I ask her why. She says - it’s pretty and shiny. She doesn’t care about one other aspect of the car.

Right? Because with the higher end cars people just see Range Rover and know that they will be seen as higher end. Like those people that buy  M and AMG models for no other reason than it was the most expensive version of a model.

OH! Almost forgot this gem

I go to autozone to get something for my corvette.

Guy at the counter asks me what I need and what kind of car it is.

Under chevrolet option there are two - cars or trucks. He looks at me and asks is it a truck or a car.

I really wanted to go someplace else at that point but the thing I needed was so insignificant that driving miles out of the way would not have been worth it.

Sad. Same thing happened when my step mom bought her Mercedes SL. I asked her why SL, she said “Because its a Mercedes”.

I am terrified she will buy a Chiron one day because it’s pretty and not realize the price is a monthly installment, not a buy out price. (just exaggerating a bit. I would be ecs tatic if my wife came home with a C hiron)

My favorite is this, and it has happened several times-

Me: So, is your Accord a V6?

Them: No, it’s a V4

When I was starting at a large company, the hr rep was handing forms for our parking passes. This older woman goes “what if we don’t know our plate?” “Well we can add that later, just out make year  and model” “make?” “Uh the company that makes it” “ what if we don’t know that?” “Well we can fill that jn later. You don’t know the model?” “It’s red”

You could just tell the hr rep was having doubts about that hiring g choice.

Because they have more money than care for what they are buying. My grandmother loves Jags and has buying them all her life. I can guarantee you she has no idea what type of engine she has and she dropped over 6 figures on it.

Buddy of mine got sway bar links for his CR-V from a dealership. My buddy asked if they came with bolts and nuts. Dealership said no. Just re-use the original.

Well, after decade of salt and water and snow, those bolts and nuts are one with earth.

My buddy gave them an earful for wasting his time making him come back for something as trivial as bolts and nuts.

I once was told a quote that really makes a lot a sense and reduced a lot of unnecessary anxiety/stress/whatever you want to call it... I was giving myself:

“How others spend their money is none of your business.” There was a caveat on the tail end saying, unless it directly harmed you or someone than there really is no need to pay any mind to it.

I love confusing them because I get parts for my boat from Napa, etc. knowing things like the distributor cap, for example, are no different from the automotive versions.

I know I can get to the right part if I can find the right engine. But God Forbid I say “it’s for a boat” they get all bent out of shape, “OH NO MARINE IS DIFFERENT WE DON’T CARRY MARINE STUFF SPARK PROTECTION NOOOOO”

Gotta stick with, “it’s a 2002 Chevy 1/2 ton, 5.7 engine...”

When I was a kid, a relative had a 64 Galaxie convertible. I was quite taken with the car, and called it a “Mercury Cadillac”. But I was 3, so I have an excuse.

An old co-worker was convinced her Equinox had a “V4".  I tried to clarify that with her once I think, went nowhere, I gave up.  I also had a teacher who thought BMW meant “British Motor Works” - with the way the Germans have conquered the British motor industry, it works in a backwards way.

Will give partial credit to the Mercedes people.

The 450 badge did come back, though behind the letters so atleast we know they didnt pay top dollar for the car

And with kompressor you can get a 50/50 guess on exactly the car with 100% confidence in what motor it had.

One thing I have to admit is that my wife knows what’s pretty and what’s not. I have doubts she even knows what a chiron is or if she considers it pretty. It’s a conversation we haven’t had yet and since neither of us have an indoor pool filled with gold and money, it’s not really a priority

Oh yeah that goes without saying. But when you have to come to me for a service that directly affects how one spends their money, especially when that service is pertaining to whatever you spent your money on, that’s when it becomes my business. And that’s where people’s stupidity shows. Especially when they get mad about whatever it is they spent their money on, but are too dumb to know anything more than that they purchased it.

Oh yeah that’s a honest kid mistake. But when you’re like 54 there’s no excuse. British Motor Works makes sense. But I bet if you had pressed this person on it further, they would've come to their own realization that they are wrong.

That’s a fair statement, sorry I should have prefaced it. I just know how infuriating it’d get when my friends would spend their money and then complain they have none while I have some. I saved and they didn’t.

I think in this day and age, idiocracy is the excuse.

I remember the BMW gaffe, as I was me, I promptly corrected her, and explained the colors on the roundel.  I got along with this teacher, so it wasn’t taken as being too brash.

All except one.  I wonder if he had borrowed his wife’s vehicle that morning.

Well I can’t say I’ve seen a lot of them, but there is one that I see at work all the time and yes, middle aged woman. I’ve also seen her office and somehow, the car just... makes sense. I’m sure if I asked her what kind of car she has, she’d say “blue!” Which is true. At least it’s a nice color.
